The total number of outbreaks detected this year in Portugal stands at 31.
The Directorate-General for Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV) emphasized that the vast majority of outbreaks in domestic birds originate from contact with wild birds, urging the reinforcement of biosecurity measures.
Domestic birds in establishments located in high-risk areas, including household coops and captive birds, must be kept in confinement.
In protected and surveillance zones, the circulation of birds, repopulation of game birds, fairs, markets, and exhibitions, as well as the movement of fresh meat and eggs for incubation and human consumption, and animal by-products, are prohibited.
The DGAV stated that all violations of these regulations will be penalized.
At the beginning of the month, avian flu was confirmed again in the districts of Aveiro and Santarém.
The 2025 edition of Avisan—National Bird, Pet, Equipment, and Accessories Exhibition in Santarém—was canceled due to the worsening health situation caused by avian flu, announced the National Exhibition Center and Agricultural Markets (CNEMA).
The event, which was scheduled to take place between November 29 and December 1, was suspended “due to exceptional conditions and the climate of uncertainty over the coming weeks,” stated the Board of Directors of CNEMA, in a statement.
Any suspicion of avian flu infection should be reported to the DGAV.
The DGAV is a central service of the direct administration of the state, with administrative autonomy.
