A 27-year-old man was arrested for stealing a cash register from a commercial establishment in Covilhã, using a fake weapon in the process.
The suspect was “intercepted minutes later in a city park,” according to a statement by the Public Security Police (PSP).
The same report highlighted that both the victims and authorities were approached with the fake weapon, with it only being determined later that the weapon was a replica.
The young man was found in possession of 57.34 euros in notes and coins.
The cash register, meanwhile, was abandoned in the Ribeira da Degoldra, along with a hooded sweatshirt.
The individual was brought for an initial judicial interrogation and was placed under house arrest using electronic monitoring devices.
“Until the mentioned technical means are installed, the defendant will await in preventive custody,” the PSP noted.
