Rosalía faces a fine of up to 600 thousand € for improvised performance in Madrid

The Madrid City Council confirmed on Tuesday that singer Rosalía did not obtain permission for the presentation of her new album, ‘Lux’, in Plaza del Callao, in the Spanish capital, on Monday night. The Catalan artist may face a fine of up to 600,000 euros.

The event was confirmed to be improvised, and the council has not indicated whether Rosalía will indeed be fined or the exact amount and nature of any penalty. “We are requesting all information, as it seems no express permission was granted for the event. We will investigate and act accordingly,” explained municipal spokeswoman Inma Sanz.

Urbanism, Environment, and Mobility official Borja Carabante stated that if the council confirms the event was unauthorized, a disciplinary process could be initiated, potentially resulting in a fine for holding an event on public roads without permission. “The severity needs to be determined. No stage was set up, to my knowledge, nor was there noise emission, so it may not be very serious, but we must start a sanctioning process that will involve the corresponding penalty if applicable,” he noted.

Rosalía announced through a live broadcast on TikTok that she would present “a surprise” at Plaza de Callao at 10 p.m. local time on Monday. The broadcast was cut and resumed on Instagram, showing the artist in central Madrid, running surrounded by fans and passersby. She later entered the Vincci hotel, from where she continued to greet the crowd.

Her new work, ‘Lux’, is set to be released on November 7. This marks her first album in three years since the release of ‘Motomami’.
