The new Pope’s approach is anticipated to reflect values beneficial to humanity and resonate with the inclusive and tolerant messages championed by Pope Francis, according to Rui Tavares. Speaking at a cultural discussion at Escola do Largo in Lisbon, alongside the Spanish Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun and European Greens co-president Vula Tsetsi, Tavares expressed hope for a continuation of constructive dialogue under the new leadership.
Wishing success to the newly elected Pontiff, Tavares emphasized the importance of maintaining a fruitful dialogue between religious and non-religious communities, reminiscent of the spirit shown by Pope Francis.
Tavares highlighted the moral and civic influence inherently tied to the papal role, suggesting that the cardinals likely weighed geopolitical considerations in their selection of the new Pope.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, aged 69, was elected Pope after a two-day conclave held in Vatican City, adopting the name Leo XIV. Born in Chicago, USA, he carries Spanish ancestry and Peruvian nationality, and is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine.
Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 on April 21.
