Rui Ventura has been elected president of Turismo Centro de Portugal on March 27 and will be officially taking office on Tuesday in Aveiro.
The Pinhel City Council, located in the district of Guarda, gathered today and approved Ventura’s request for a 180-day suspension from his current mandate.
Cited in a municipal statement, Rui Ventura, who is serving his final term due to legal boundaries, emphasized the importance of having a strong team and wished “the best for those who will be leading the City Council in the coming months.”
The request for suspension was unanimously approved.
Rui Ventura, representing the Social Democratic Party (PSD), was elected president of the executive committee of Turismo Centro de Portugal (TCP), securing 57.72% of the votes in an extraordinary general assembly held in Coimbra.
During the election called specifically to appoint a new president after the passing of the previous leader, Raul Almeida, Ventura received a total of 86 votes, surpassing Walter Chicharro (Socialist Party), a deputy in the Portuguese Parliament and former mayor of Nazaré, who garnered 60 votes (40.27%).
As indicated by the TCP statement, provided to the Lusa news agency, there were also three blank votes recorded. A total of 149 members participated, representing 93.7% of the 159-member electoral college, comprising 100 municipalities from the Centro region and other public and private organizations in the tourism sector.
The elections for the leadership of Turismo Centro de Portugal were organized following the death of the former president, Raul Almeida, who succumbed to a prolonged illness in December 2024.
The other social bodies of the regional tourism entity, elected in July 2023, remain unchanged.
