Russia wants to boost trade relations with Mexico

The event taking place in Mexico City follows the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump of a new package of tariffs that excludes Russia and Mexico.

In this context, Russian ambassador to Mexico, Nikolay Sofinsky, remarked that the evolving international economic landscape presents “new windows of opportunity.”

“I congratulate Mexico for not being on the list of tariffs announced by Trump regarding other countries,” Sofinsky stated, adding that despite “contradictory” global trends, many of these are helping to revive trade and investment relations between the two countries.

The diplomat described the current tariff war as “interesting,” as it is reshaping global trade rules, which he believes will be beneficial for both nations.

Among other opportunities, the ambassador noted that Russia can supply the uranium required for the operation of the Laguna Verde nuclear plant in Mexico and has “unique” railway technologies and advances in artificial intelligence.

Sofinsky indicated that trade between Mexico and Russia amounts to around $2 billion annually, but suggested that it could double in a few months with the right instruments.

The commercial representative of the Russian Federation in Mexico, Aleksandr Abramov, spoke about the “great potential for cooperation” that remains untapped and emphasized the need to ensure trade in national currencies and to establish banking relations.

Abramov highlighted that Russia currently trades with Mexico in fertilizers, metals, wheat, and other agricultural products. He stressed that Russian fertilizer companies and the Russian pharmaceutical industry aim to sell directly in Mexico.

“The interest of Russian producers in entering the Mexican market is constantly growing and I believe that we will soon witness an increase in economic volume between Russia and Mexico,” he predicted.
