Russiagate: CML will go “to the limit” to “protect taxpayers”

The social democrat Carlos Moedas spoke to journalists during a visit to the Alvalade fire station of the Lisbon Fire Brigade.

The Southern Central Administrative Court deemed “unfounded” the appeal by the Lisbon Chamber regarding the decision to fine the municipality more than one million euros—subsequently reduced—for sharing the data of Russian activists who organized a demonstration in the city near the Russian embassy in 2021.

The news, reported today, and confirmed by Lusa, pertains to a decision made on Friday. The judges involved stated that “no other conclusion can be reached except that the municipality of Lisbon acted with intent, as it is demonstrated that its actions violate administrative duties, and the municipality of Lisbon was aware of this violation.”

This marks the second judicial defeat for the Lisbon City Hall concerning a fine of 1.25 million euros imposed by the National Data Protection Commission (CNPD) in 2022 for breaches of the General Data Protection Regulation by “communicating personal data of demonstration organizers to third parties.”

The initial fine amount was reduced due to the expiration of some offenses and now stands at 738,000 euros. According to the report, this amount corresponds to the commission of 65 offenses.
