“Sad.” School provides “support” after disappearance of siblings

The Dr. Luís Pereira da Costa School in Monte Redondo has stated it is in “contact with the competent authorities” regarding the disappearance of two children, students at the institution, who went missing at sea at Pedrógão Beach on Sunday afternoon. The school is offering “psychological and emotional support to those in need.”

“We received the sad news of the disappearance of two students from our school at Pedrógão Beach,” reads a statement published Monday on the social media page of the school in Leiria County.

The institution, “in this moment of anguish,” expressed “total solidarity with the family and friends of the children” and assured that it is in “contact with the competent authorities.”

“We are in contact with the competent authorities and closely follow the progress of the searches. We ask everyone for calm in this difficult moment. The school is available to provide psychological and emotional support to those in need,” the statement continued.

Two minors, aged 11 and 16, disappeared Sunday afternoon, “after allegedly swimming at Pedrógão Beach in the county of Leiria, a beach that is not yet supervised this season,” reported the National Maritime Authority (AMN).

“The searches were suspended at the end of today without finding the victims, and tomorrow they will be conducted as part of the daily patrols performed by the National Maritime Authority, both by sea and by land,” read a note released early Monday evening.

The alert about the disappearance of the children, two siblings, was issued at 5:25 PM Sunday through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center, and searches were initiated.
