Salvador Caetano Auto will now be responsible for the import and distribution of the Japanese car manufacturer. The transfer of operations is expected to be completed in November.

Salvador Caetano Auto, of the Salvador Caetano group, will become the importer and distributor of new Nissan cars, and will also be responsible for the distribution of parts and services in Portugal, the Japanese manufacturer said Thursday in a statement.

The conclusion of the operation, the document said, is pending approval by the competition authorities.

“Portugal is currently managed, with Spain, under the Regional Business Unit (RBU) Iberia. Under the partnership announced today, all operations in Portugal will be transferred to Salvador Caetano Auto as the new distribution partner for this market. As part of the agreement, Nissan will transfer all its employees in Portugal to the new importer,” the statement said.

The changes to Nissan’s business in Portugal “were communicated today to Nissan employees and dealers in Portugal” and the transfer of Nissan’s operations in Portugal to Salvador Caetano Auto begins today and is expected to be completed in November 2023.

“This decision follows an extensive review of our operations in Portugal and is based on Nissan’s roadmap for sustainable growth, which involves streamlining our business, as well as prioritizing and focusing to transform the organization into a simpler and more agile company,” said Sinan Ozkok, managing director of Independent Markets and vice president of Business Development for Nissan AMIEO region (Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania), quoted in the statement.

“We are delighted to have Salvador Caetano as our partner in Portugal. As a Portuguese company with more than 70 years of history in the automotive sector, Salvador Caetano currently operates in more than 40 countries and has in-depth knowledge of the Portuguese market,” adds Ozkok.

Sérgio Ribeiro, CEO of Salvador Caetano Auto, emphasizes that “this agreement establishes a milestone of great importance for both companies. After a long-lasting partnership in retail activities in Portugal, we are now evolving our role to become Nissan’s distributor for the Portuguese market. Furthermore, this partnership will allow us to support Nissan in implementing a more agile strategy, with a greater focus on the national market and, above all, on meeting the needs of our customers”.
