The alleged pollution incident observed in the Tagus River on Monday, near the wharf of Vila Velha de Ródão in the Castelo Branco district, prompted both the National Republican Guard’s Environmental Protection Unit (SEPNA) and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) to collect water samples for analysis.
“On Monday, SEPNA and APA were on site collecting water for analysis,” confirmed Lieutenant Colonel Miguel Silva, the Communications and Public Relations Officer for the Castelo Branco Territorial Command, today.
The mayor of Vila Velha de Ródão, Luís Pereira, stated that he reported the incident to the APA.
While the source of the problem has yet to be identified, the mayor noted that this situation is not new and tends to occur when Spanish dams discharge water.
