Santa Maria Hospital clarified today that, since last week, it has had 15 babies admitted to Neonatology colonized with the multidrug-resistant bacteria that forced the service to close, three were discharged and one died.
In the case of the death, the hospital source stressed that, since there are still no autopsy results, no causal link with the bacteria can be established.
Today, 11 babies colonized with the bacterium and two negative are hospitalized.
According to Lusa on Thursday, the Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte (CHULN), the positive babies are clinically stable and the Local Coordinating Group of the Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Resistance Program of CHULN “is monitoring the situation in accordance with the rules of the Directorate-General for Health”.
The hospital center also said that the hospital’s neonatology service is closed to new admissions and babies “have not been and will not be transferred” to other hospitals.
“The response in this area is ensured by internal means of CHULN and through articulation with the network during the good practice procedures necessary to resolve the situation”, he assured.
On Thursday, speaking to Sic Notícias, the director of the Neonatology Service at Hospital de Santa Maria, André Graça, said that the bacteria detected in the service is multidrug-resistant to most antibiotics used, which causes “more concern” in the event that it becomes necessary to treat an infection.
