Ribau Esteves, the mayor of Aveiro, presented a public protest against the decision of the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) to close the São Jacinto Dunes Nature Reserve to visitors.

The state body had decided to close the reserve, claiming insecurity caused by the presence of a pack of dogs in that forest area. However, at the end of last week, after the Municipality’s complaint, the ICNF reversed its decision.

The day before yesterday, at a meeting of the city council, Ribau Esteves considered the decision to close the visits “absurd”, in addition to classifying it as “illegal, abnormal and immoral”. Even because the pack of dogs in question exists in that space “for about four years”. And he added that the protest was accepted by the ICNF. “The next day, the reserve was reopened. The president apologized, assumed the error and the situation was overcome,” explained the mayor.

Rehabilitation of the Griné Neighborhood

At the same meeting, Ribau Esteves made public a second protest he presented, directed to the Minister of Housing and to the President of the Housing and Urban Rehabilitation Institute (IHRU).

At issue is the fact that the work of rehabilitation of the neighborhood of Griné, which will be initiated by the IHRU, “only treat the pathologies of two of their blocks. The Câmara de Aveiro defends a work of total rehabilitation of the neighborhoods of Griné and Caião. Following the protest, the president of the institute scheduled a visit to Aveiro.
