The Viseu Marca – an organization dedicated to territorial marketing and branding of Viseu, created in 2016 by the Municipality of Viseu and the Business Association of the Viseu Region (AIRV) – is hosting the event, which runs until September 21. A press release describes this as “one of the largest editions ever.”
Inaugurated tonight at 9:30 PM by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, the fair is themed “Viseu, the city for happiness.”
“There is an increased focus on sustainability, in social and environmental aspects, with a space for autistic children and an environmental awareness route featuring the 17 United Nations (UN) goals; a new food court, a renewed eels space, and attractions,” the organizers highlight.
Sports remain a cornerstone of this historical event, with “around 60 activities for amateurs and professionals” scheduled, including the 42nd Carlos Lopes Half Marathon and a martial arts tournament debut.
Over the 46 days of the fair, performers such as Danish musician Lukas Graham, Matias Damásio, Dillaz, Calema, Fernando Daniel, Nininho Vaz Maia, Bárbara Tinoco, Miguel Araújo, Carolina de Deus, Joana Almeirante, Mariza Bispo, João Só, Father Guilherme, and Rita Guerra will take the stage.
Music bands such as GNR, Gipsy Kings, Canta Baía, Táxi, and Fingertips will also perform, including a tribute to Marco Paulo titled “Para Sempre Marco.”
On August 29, the second edition of Mateus Fest will begin, aimed at younger audiences, headlined by Brazilian rapper Matûe, with Van Zee, Lon3r Johny, ProfJam, and DJ Perez performing beforehand.
“The Fair is the true stage of happiness and reunions for the people of Viseu and friends from near and far, our emigrants, and also neighbors. Every year, despite its six centuries of history, it reinvents itself to meet the occasion’s demands, the public’s expectations, while preserving and enhancing its identity, flavors, and traditions. That’s what makes it authentic, genuine, and unique,” emphasizes Fernando Ruas, Mayor of Viseu, in the press release.
Pedro Alves, president of Viseu Marca, considers it “a major national event” that aims to be “for everyone, inclusive.” Emphasizing “a strong commitment to sustainability, not just environmentally, but also, importantly, socially.”
“The space we created this year for accompanying autistic children proves this,” he notes, adding to the existing area for people with reduced mobility to watch performances.
