Sapadores report municipalities’ failure to pay overtime hours.

“We cannot accept that those on the front lines protecting us are treated with such disrespect and negligence, and we are currently considering initiating various forms of protest,” states the union’s communiqué released today.

The SNBS criticizes and condemns “vehemently the attitude of local authorities and the Government towards the illegalities and professional devaluation of the firefighting forces,” accusing municipalities of not paying overtime for fighting forest fires, a situation “that has led to exceeding the legal work limits prescribed by law.”

“Despite this additional effort and dedication, at the end of the month, these professionals were not duly compensated for the hours worked, even though the Government approved measures in the Council of Ministers to allow such payment,” the union’s statement says.

Accusing municipalities of “disrespect for firefighters” and “irresponsible and illegal management of human resources,” the SNBS also accuses the Government of responding with “silence and inaction” to the union’s complaints and requests for meetings.

“The Government, despite being informed, has not demonstrated a willingness to intervene to resolve this serious problem, opting to postpone meetings that could lead to overcoming these constraints. The Government’s stance is unacceptable. Its responsibility is to ensure compliance with the law and uphold the dignity of workers, especially those performing essential roles for public safety. The government’s omission in the face of these irregularities constitutes a dangerous complacency that undermines institutions and weakens public services,” the union criticizes.
