The sardine fishing using purse seine methods will be prohibited in the Algarve between Saturday and Monday, announced the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM).
The sardine fishing ban applies “in the jurisdiction area of the harbormasters’ offices of Olhãopesca and Barlapescas ports, from 6:00 PM on Saturday (June 21) to 6:00 PM on Monday (June 23) — covering the offices of Olhão, Faro Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António, Lagos, and Portimão,” the official document stated.
Purse seine fishing involves using a long, high net wall released to encircle the fish, in this case, sardines, from the sides and underneath, thereby limiting their ability to escape.
The DGRM is a central service under the direct administration of the State, with administrative autonomy, aiming to develop maritime safety and services, implement fishing policies, and preserve resources.
