Sardine recovers and landings reach 32,000 tons

“[…] The current state of the resource shows signs of maintaining the recovery observed in recent years, reflecting the sustainable management efforts adopted by Portugal and Spain,” stated the Ministry of Agriculture and Sea in response to queries.

The Sardine Fishing Monitoring Commission convened last Friday, and according to data from the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Security, and Maritime Services (DGRM), national landings reached 32,000 tons by October 15.

This amounts to an estimated 39 million euros, an increase of five million euros compared to the total value expected for the 2024 campaign.

For the current year, the catch limit for Portugal was set at 34,406 tons.

“The Sardine Fishing Monitoring Commission emphasizes that decisions regarding the management plan and catch limits for the coming year will be based on the best scientific information available, maintaining a commitment to ensure the sustainability of the resource, the balance of the marine ecosystem, and the socio-economic viability of the sector,” it noted.
