The “Sea Satellite Account” from the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicates that the Gross Value Added (GVA) of the maritime economy accounted for 3.3% and 3.5% of the total GVA of the national economy in 2020-2021, a biennium “strongly marked by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
However, in 2022 and 2023, the relative importance of this sector in the national GVA increased to 4.2% and 4.3%, respectively, “reflecting mainly the greater dynamism of tourism-related activities.”
Overall, in the period under review (2020-2023), the GVA of the maritime economy grew above the GVA of the national economy.
