A seal has been spotted in recent days on the beaches of Cascais, in the Lisbon district.

The first sighting occurred on Wednesday at Praia dos Pescadores (Fishermen’s Beach). The RALVT – Stranding Network of Lisbon and Tagus Valley revealed through social media that they received an alert from the Maritime Police of Cascais at 5:45 PM, reporting the presence of a grey seal on that beach.

The RALVT team “moved as quickly as possible to the site to investigate the situation.” After monitoring for approximately two hours, “the seal eventually left the bay and headed out to open sea, making any intervention with the animal impossible.”

On Friday, the RALVT “received another alert of a grey seal sighting,” “but this time the animal was spotted near the Paredão in the Monte Estoril area.”

“The animal was floating in the water, apparently in a resting position. No external injuries were visible, nor were there any nets or other debris trapping the animal, and it did not appear emaciated (thin),” they explained.

After monitoring for approximately three hours, “the animal eventually submerged and moved away to open sea, and a boat inspection was carried out to see if the animal could be spotted again.”

To ensure the safety and well-being of the animal, the RALVT appeals “to the public not to approach” and “not to try to interact with it, giving it the opportunity to rest.”
