The search for a couple of tourists who have been missing since Saturday on the north coast of the island of Madeira continues today, said a source from the PSP, stressing that they are on the coast, by land and sea.
Speaking to Lusa, a source from the PSP said that, after searches in mountainous areas, today’s work is essentially concentrated in the coastal area, between Fajã da Areia and the center of the municipality of São Vicente.
The PJ was involved in the operation to investigate a possible criminal situation, although so far there are no suspects.
According to the PSP, there are still no clues as to the whereabouts of the missing tourists.
The operation is being coordinated by the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP), in which the Judicial Police (PJ), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Madeira Operational Command, the Regional Civil Protection Service and the Maritime Authority are also involved.
The tourists, a man and a woman of French nationality, aged 58 and 56, were last seen in the area of sítio do Calhau, in the municipality of São Vicente, on the north coast of the island, where they were staying.
According to the PSP, the alert was raised on Saturday afternoon by the couple’s daughter, who had chosen to rest in their accommodation that day, while her parents decided to go for a walk in the surrounding area.
The police say that a witness at the scene reported seeing the tourists walking in the direction of Porto Moniz, a municipality adjacent to São Vicente, on the north coast.
