A second firefighter has died following the same accident that had already claimed the life of a colleague from the fire brigade. There are also three others seriously injured.
In a statement on social media, the Liga dos Bombeiros Portugueses expressed sorrow over the loss: “The Liga dos Bombeiros Portugueses (LBP) mourns the death of two firefighters from the Voluntary Firefighters of Covilhã and the serious injuries sustained by the other members, who were victims of the vehicle rollover as they responded to fires.”
“The LBP will make a statement soon, but extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased firefighters and to the Humanitarian Association of Voluntary Firefighters of Covilhã,” the statement added.
Initially, it was reported that one firefighter from Covilhã had died and four others were injured in a road accident on the way to a fire in the municipality of Fundão this past Sunday.
In a release to the press, the Autoridade Nacional de Emergência e Proteção Civil (ANEPC) had reported, “A firefighter from the Covilhã Fire Brigade died today, August 17, in a road accident at 19:10, while en route to address the fire that started in the locality of Quinta do Campo, Fundão.”
The death toll has now risen to two.

A firefighter died and four others were injured in an accident in Aldeia de São Francisco de Assis, in the municipality of Covilhã. According to Civil Protection, the injured are being rescued.
