The municipality announced that the second phase of the project includes the construction of a boardwalk in the wetland area, a birdwatching structure, and a square with a café, concert area, picnic space, and a children’s playground with a sandbox.
A parking area with a capacity for approximately 50 cars will also be constructed.
The first phase of the intervention, now completed, focused on the redevelopment of the urban front of the City Park, with an investment exceeding 1.5 million euros.
The project’s third phase envisions the construction of a pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Cávado River, as well as the redevelopment of the river’s left bank at the entrance to the Ofir tourist and residential area.
“This area, partially included in the Natura 2000 Network, requires solutions that respect the ecological sensitivity of the estuary, with special attention to the preservation of habitats and natural values,” the municipality emphasized.
There is currently no budget forecast for this third phase.
With an intervention area of 30 hectares, the City Park project covers the riverside area of the Cávado River, between the former Naval Shipyard and the D. Luís Filipe bridge, including part of Avenida Engenheiro Eduardo Arantes e Oliveira and the EN-13 up to the bridge, as well as the declassified section of the same road.
Developed by architect Vítor Mogadouro, the project proposes the “progressive naturalization of the landscape,” significantly transforming the intervention area, promoting public enjoyment, and creating “wide visual openings” to the river.
The planned parking lot will provide access to the park or the North Coastal Cycle Path towards Santiago de Compostela, with direct connection to the future pedestrian and cycling bridge to Fão and the Cávado Cycle Path.
