António José Seguro stated he was aware that the Socialist Party (PS) has scheduled its National Commission to discuss the presidential elections. Speaking at the “Conversations with the President” event by the AEP Foundation in Porto, Seguro emphasized that his candidacy is non-partisan and respects party proceedings.
Responding to media inquiries, Seguro reiterated his independent stance, emphasizing unity over division and opposition to those who build barriers.
“The presidential election is individual, where candidates bring their life experiences, perspectives, values, and principles,” he stressed.
PS is set to decide on its support for a presidential candidate during a National Commission meeting on October 19.
Seguro further clarified that his candidacy did not result from any clandestine agreements, referring to the lunch between presidential candidate Henrique Gouveia e Melo and Chega leader André Ventura, who recently announced his candidacy.
“Everything I do is transparent and open. I appeal to the Portuguese people for their trust,” Seguro asserted.
In an interview with SIC, Gouveia e Melo confirmed his meeting with Ventura and criticized the political instrumentalization of the upcoming January presidential elections.
Responding to Gouveia e Melo’s statements, Seguro expressed skepticism about a supposedly independent candidate meeting secretly with a party leader, questioning its implications for independence.
“What transpired during that lunch? What was agreed?” he queried.
