Sérgio Aires is a candidate for the Bloco de Esquerda in Porto.

The announcement regarding Sérgio Aires’s candidacy for the Porto elections will be made publicly on Thursday at 18:00 in Jardim de São Lázaro. This will signify the official launch of his campaign, as stated in a communiqué.

The Left Bloc party emphasized the importance of offering a strong left-wing alternative for Porto, striving for a “safe harbor and a city that is freer, fairer, and more fraternal.”

The party added that the candidacy follows a four-year term characterized by active engagement that amplified numerous causes.

Sérgio Aires, a sociology graduate, currently serves as a councilman without a portfolio at the Porto City Hall. From 2017 to 2019, he acted as a consultant for the Regional Government of the Azores, devising a strategy to combat poverty.

In the upcoming elections, Sérgio Aires will face other candidates, including Manuel Pizarro (PS), Diana Ferreira (CDU), Nuno Cardoso (Porto Primeiro), Aníbal Pinto (Nova Direita), Pedro Duarte representing the coalition “O Porto Somos Nós” (PSD/IL/CDS-PP), Guilherme Alexandre Jorge (Volt), current vice-president Filipe Araújo (Fazer à Porto), António Araújo (Porto à Porto), Hélder Sousa (Livre), and Miguel Corte-Real (Chega).

The current executive leadership is dominated by Rui Moreira’s movement with six elected members, alongside one independent councilor. The remaining members include two elected from PS, two from PSD, one from CDU, and one from BE.
