Sérgio Godinho launches a book of short stories. “A subject that yields many narratives”

At nearly 80 years old, Sérgio Godinho has released a new book of short stories titled ‘As if There Were No Tomorrow – Suicidal Stories’, exploring themes of suicide with characters “attracted by the abyss.” The book has arrived in bookstores just in time for summer vacation reading. Speaking to Notícias ao Minuto, Godinho clarified, “I have no suicidal impulse,” but finds the topic “dramatically interesting and important.”

Despite this literary venture, Godinho has been busy with other projects, including planning a new album and performing live concerts. He will soon be honored at the Feira do Livro do Porto, where he will present his new book and perform with his band, Os Assessores.

Sérgio Godinho recently published ‘As if There Were No Tomorrow – Suicidal Stories’. He explained, “It’s a decision about our own life. In two of the stories, the suicides aren’t even completed, but it’s a subject present throughout. It offers many narratives since it’s often a solitary solution, not always understood by others.” Godinho is keen to emphasize that the stories are not morbid or depressing.

The final story reflects a sense of hope, without a completed suicide act. Godinho expressed a desire to return to writing short stories after having produced a series of novels. He said, “They are independent stories, different from one another but united by a common theme.”

He noted that the rejection in creative work can be traumatic, although he strives to avoid such feelings. Godinho’s interest in such narratives is partly inspired by indirect experiences, such as that of a successful actor fearing public rejection.

Having studied psychology before entering the arts, Godinho does not consider his stories psychological. He said, “These impulses aren’t easily explained; they’re part of the person. An attraction to the abyss. I don’t focus on unrequited love, for instance.” He indicated that some stories involve situations where rejection results in extreme actions.

The author believes there are emerging structures in Portugal to support mental health, though they remain inadequate.

Godinho wrote the book over several sessions, revising it thoroughly due to his busy schedule, which includes performances. As for when he feels most inspired, Godinho finds late afternoon and nighttime suitable for writing due to fewer interruptions.

Acknowledging his upcoming homage at the Feira do Livro do Porto, coinciding with his 80th birthday, Godinho expresses gratitude for the recognition in his birthplace. He will be honored with a linden tree inscribed with his chosen lyrics on August 23. His book will be presented on August 30, followed by a performance on September 7, which marks the book fair’s closing.

When asked if there’s anything left for him to achieve, Godinho humorously mentioned uncertainty about writing for theater again, although he enjoys exploring new artistic paths and is gradually working on a new album, expected next year.

Reflecting on past censorship of his early work, Godinho remains optimistic about creative expression in the future. He commented on a recent controversy involving comedians, asserting that humor should not be misused as an offensive tool.

Currently, Godinho is inspired by artists like Ana Lua Caiano and collaborates with Garota Não, both of whom have unique artistic visions.
