Titled Álvaro Siza: The Archive, the exhibition will be on display from June 6 to September 7 at the Power Station of Art, China’s first public museum of contemporary art and the site of the Shanghai Biennale.
This is an adaptation of the C.A.S.A. exhibition, presented in Serralves in 2024, and it represents the largest exhibition ever held on the work of Álvaro Siza, according to a statement released by the organization.
Curated by architect António Choupina — in collaboration with Siza Vieira and Carlos Castanheira — the exhibition is jointly organized by the Serralves Museum and the Power Station of Art and offers a chronological account of the Portuguese architect’s work over nearly a century, from his childhood drawings to the various typologies that define his career.
In total, the exhibits cover almost a kilometer of exhibition space, the organization highlighted.
“Based on art, geometry, and beauty, this exhibition presents a portrait of Siza as a true contemporary thinker, whose practice continues to use drawing as a tool to unravel the internal mechanisms of architecture and thought,” reads the statement.
The 91-year-old architect from Porto has completed several significant works in China, in collaboration with Carlos Castanheira, including the Building on the Water in Huai’an (east) and the Ningbo Museum of Art and Education.
The exhibition also marks the 30th anniversary of the twinning agreement between the cities of Shanghai and Porto.
