Seven mainland districts are today under yellow warning due to the forecast of rain and thunderstorms, while in Madeira a worsening of the weather is expected for Monday with two regions in red and another under orange warning.
The warnings from the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) are valid between noon and 9pm today for the seven mainland districts, namely Bragança, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Guarda, Portalegre, Vila Real and Viseu.
The IPMA predicts the occurrence of showers, “sometimes strong and may occasionally be hail and accompanied by strong gusts of wind” and frequent and scattered thunderstorms.
In the Madeira archipelago, information available on IPMA’s website indicates that the mountainous regions and southern coast of the island will be under an orange warning due to precipitation between 12:00 and 15:00 on Monday, and then a worsening of the precipitation is expected to raise the level to red, between 15:00 on Monday and 15:00 on Tuesday.
In the north coast region, the orange warning due to rain that can be heavy and persistent at times “especially in the western part” is expected to be in effect between noon on Monday and 3:00 pm the next day.
During the same period, Porto Santo will be under yellow warning, also due to the forecast of rain, sometimes heavy.
In the current weather warning system, yellow is the least severe and refers to a “risk situation for certain weather-dependent activities.
Hazard warnings also include orange and red (the most severe), while green indicates the absence of a forecast of a hazardous weather situation.
