Seven people have died on the beaches since the beginning of the bathing season, on May 1, and 373 rescues and 903 first aid actions were made, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) revealed today.
“Three months into the 2023 bathing season, the National Maritime Authority recorded, between May 1 and July 31, 373 rescues, 903 first aid actions and seven fatalities on Portuguese beaches”, indicates the AMN in a statement.
In the note, AMN said that two deaths occurred on guarded sea beaches, with the occurrence of “sudden illness” being pointed out as the cause of the accidents. One of the deaths occurred in Porto Santo (Madeira), in June, and the other in Nazaré (Leiria district), in July.
On unsupervised sea beaches in the Algarve there were also two deaths in July, one in Lagos, with “sudden illness” as the probable cause, and another in Vila Real de Santo António, by drowning.
Two other people drowned in July in unsupervised sea areas, one of them in the Douro River, in Avintes (municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, district of Porto), and another at Alburrica beach, in Barreiro (district of Setúbal).
At Salgado beach in Nazaré, one person drowned in June, before the start of the bathing season there (July 1 to August 31).
