Sex education? It emerges “explicitly” in the ENEC, says minister

In Marvão, located in the Portalegre district, during his participation in the third edition of the Erasmus + Education and Training Summer School dedicated to digital transition, the official noted that health was the topic that received “the most contributions” during the public consultation.

“The dimension of health was the one that received the most contributions in this National Education and Skills Strategy (ENEC), with 87% of the contributions focusing on health. The dimension of sexual education was also frequently mentioned. It was present in the text, but not explicitly enough, so we made it more explicit,” he stated.

“Sexual education now appears explicitly; I had the opportunity to count, and the words sexual, sexuality, or sexual appear seven times now. The learning content was there, but there was discussion, and if indeed it was not clear enough for society, I think it is clear now,” he argued.

Fernando Alexandre further commented that issues related to sustainability and biodiversity were also mentioned in the public consultation, as well as financial literacy.

“Financial literacy, which is a dimension that fortunately concerns more and more Portuguese people, was also frequently mentioned. When we looked at essential learnings before and after the public consultation, there are indeed a number of significant changes,” he considered.

Concerning the dissolution of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the Minister of Education indicated that the decree will go to the Council of Ministers on Thursday.

“The FCT will go to the next Council of Ministers as planned. This is a very profound reform. The ministry is very large, and we are very focused on the education part, which already had the diploma for the Educational System Management Agency approved. It was very important for us, now at the beginning of the school year, and soon we will have news about higher education and science,” he added.

When asked by Lusa about whether, following the extinction and merger of the ministry’s bodies, the number of teachers working in these organizations who will now return to schools has been determined, the official mentioned that more than 500 teachers are involved.

“We know that more than 500 (teachers) were and are working; we still don’t know because now we will carry out work, which is being done, to identify those who are individuals with very important knowledge for the functioning of the educational system and will continue to work in the new services,” he said.

“Obviously, many of the teachers who prove not as essential will pursue their most important activity, which is teaching classes,” he added.
