A 65-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of setting a forest fire on Tuesday in the parish of Ovil, Baião, Porto district, the GNR announced today.
In a statement, the GNR’s Territorial Command of Porto said the man was caught in the act.
During the response to the forest fire, the GNR conducted investigations to identify the fire’s causes, successfully identifying the individual responsible, “who ended up spreading the fire near his residence.”
The suspect is set to appear today in the Judicial Court of Baião.
The GNR emphasizes that open burning and agricultural fires are among the main causes of forest fires in Portugal and are prohibited whenever there is a very high or maximum fire risk level.
