A 25-year-old man was arrested on Thursday by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) on suspicion of aggravated rape against his partner, with whom he had been violent since the birth of their child.
The incidents reportedly occurred at the couple’s residence in the municipality of Cascais. The victim and the suspect had been living together since the summer of last year.
However, according to the PJ, the physical and psychological violence by the aggressor escalated following the “recent birth of their child, against whom the suspect also directed death threats.”
On the 14th, the previous Monday, the victim managed to flee the house “and went to the local hospital, where she was referred to a reference hospital in Lisbon,” detailed the PJ in a statement. The medical team alerted the authorities, prompting an immediate investigation.
This investigation led to the “collection of evidence, as well as the location and arrest of the suspect,” three days later, “in compliance with an arrest warrant issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.”
The suspect underwent an initial judicial interrogation and is currently in preventive custody.
