Shein? Brussels takes illegal online sales seriously and will take action

“If it is determined that [the sale of illegal products] is a systemic problem, the Commission will not hesitate to act,” stated Thomas Régnier, the spokesperson for Technological Sovereignty, during the daily press conference, noting that the situation has not reached the point of banning the platform in the EU.

In response to questions regarding the sale of child-like sex dolls on the Shein platform in France, Régnier mentioned that the European Commission is monitoring the situation and is in contact with the authorities in Paris.

In April 2024, the European Commission classified the Chinese company Shein as a “very large online platform,” allowing it to exercise enhanced control over the platform under the Digital Services Act.

In February, Brussels launched an investigation into the platform for allegedly insufficient control over the sales of illegal products.
