‘O Pássaro de Dentro,’ an animated short film by Laura Anahory, produced as part of her master’s program in Sound and Image at the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP) in Porto, is contributing to the Portuguese presence at the festival, featured in the Cinef selection, which is dedicated to films made within an academic context.
This marks the first time the School of Arts of UCP has been invited to this segment by the organizers, as noted by the Cannes Festival in today’s press release.
With today’s announcement, the various sections of the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, scheduled for May 13 to 24, are now complete. A total of five Portuguese films will be featured, considering the previously announced feature film ‘Entroncamento’ by Pedro Cabeleira, which will be shown in the parallel program ACID Cannes.
Adding to these four films is ‘O riso e a faca,’ the second fictional feature film by Pedro Pinho, which will feature in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section. This comes eight years after the director received a critics’ prize at the Directors’ Fortnight with ‘A fábrica de nada’ (2017).
In the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section, announced two days ago, there will also be the co-production ‘Era uma vez em Gaza,’ by Palestinian brothers Arab and Tarzan Nasser, co-produced by the Portuguese company Ukbar Filmes.
The Cannes Film Festival program, already announced, also includes the film ‘Magalhães’ by Filipino director Lav Diaz, co-produced by the Portuguese Rosa Filmes. This film, shot in Portugal and Spain, has been selected for the ‘Cannes Première’ program.
In the film market, an area focused on business and project presentation, the animated feature film ‘Ana, en passant’ by Fernanda Salgado will be showcased. This ongoing production is a collaboration between Portuguese Sardinha em Lata and Brazilian Apiário.
The Palme d’Or for the short film competition will be announced by the jury headed by Maren Ade on May 24, during the awards ceremony of the 78th Cannes Film Festival.
The awards for the Cinef selection, which shares a jury with the short film section, will be revealed on May 22.
