The SINAPOL union will be at Gare do Oriente starting at 10:00 on the 21st, distributing leaflets to the public in the first of a series of street actions aimed at “drawing attention to the urgent need for concrete measures to professionally and financially value Portuguese police officers, in light of the government’s continued lack of response to the serious and increasingly distressing problems affecting the security forces and their professionals,” according to a union statement.
Subsequent actions will take place at the Fluvial Terminal of Terreiro do Paço, in front of the Ministry of Finance, at 16:30 on the 22nd; at the arrivals area of Humberto Delgado Airport from 21:00 on the 23rd; concluding on the 24th at Terreiro do Paço and Rua Augusta, while a SINAPOL meeting with the Ministry of Internal Administration is in progress.
The SINAPOL union deems it unacceptable that the government repeatedly neglects to amend various legal documents crucial for the country’s public safety and long-awaited revisions, which are essential to rectify injustices, improve working conditions, and ensure a dignified salary consistent with the demands and responsibilities of police work, thereby restoring attractiveness to the sector, as stated in the union’s communication.
SINAPOL warns of the “direct and alarming consequences” of the devaluation of the career, namely the reduction in staff and a decreasing number of candidates entering the profession. The union demands a “serious dialogue and concrete solutions” from the government.
