Six people were arrested and two were identified on Thursday in Lisbon, during a protest against the labor package, coinciding with a general strike, informed the Public Security Police (PSP).
In a statement, the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP stated that this protest, which began at Praça D. Pedro IV (Rossio) at 2:00 PM and reached Rua de Correia Garção (in front of the Assembly of the Republic) by 4:00 PM, was communicated to the authorities.
However, according to the PSP, a group of 150 individuals, at 5:20 PM, broke away from the protest and left the front of the Assembly of the Republic, “heading towards Chiado.”
This group caused damage along the way, “namely graffiti on facades of residential and commercial buildings, having been intercepted upon arrival at Largo do Carmo”. There, some of the approached individuals reacted violently to the police approach, resulting in the arrest of two of them “for resistance and coercion against an officer and two others identified”.
Meanwhile, at the original protest, which remained in front of Parliament until around 8:30 PM, one person was arrested for “crossing the previously established police security perimeter”.
Additionally, PSP officers on site had to extinguish fire spots set by protesters twice. However, small fires continued to be set, leading to the activation of the Fire Brigade, which extinguished the fire blazing in trash bins.
According to the PSP, after the fire was extinguished, the protesters were directed to the streets adjacent to Rua Correia Garção, to prevent further damage.
At the end of the protest, around 8:38 PM, three individuals were arrested for resistance and coercion and offenses against qualified physical integrity.
In total, six arrests and two identifications were recorded.
The Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP carried out this policing “with the reinforcement of the Special Police Unit and was also supported by the Fire Brigade.”
