Six national roads are closed due to the fires. Check out

The National Republican Guard (GNR) has announced traffic restrictions on several roads as of 12:45 today. The EN236 is closed between Castanheira de Pera (Leiria district) and Alfocheira (Lousã municipality, Coimbra district), while the EN342 is impassable from Portela de Albergaria (municipality border of Lousã) to Ponte de Sótão (Góis municipality, also Coimbra district).

In the Guarda district, within Pinhel municipality, the EN222 is closed between Freixedas and Gouveias towns, and the EN340 near Freixedas, Pêra do Moço, and Pinhel towns is also shut.

Further closures in the Guarda district include the EN233 near São Bartolomeu Vale Mourisco and Quintas in Guarda municipality, and the EN324 near Quinta das Vinhas, Cerdeira, Rapoula do Coa, and the Termas do Cró in Sabugal municipality.

The GNR reminder in the press release highlights the continental territory is on alert with a prohibition on burning activities and agricultural work involving machinery.

Portugal has been hit by multiple wildfires since July, predominantly in the North and Center regions, amid high temperatures prompting a declared state of alert active until Sunday.

The fires have resulted in one death, several injuries mostly minor, and the complete or partial destruction of primary and secondary residences, agricultural and livestock farms, and forest areas.

Portugal has activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism, with two Fire Boss aircraft set to arrive on Monday to assist in firefighting efforts.

Provisional official data indicates that by August 16, 139,000 hectares had burned, 17 times the area compared to the same period in 2024. Nearly half of this area was affected over two days this week.
