Snow blanketed several northern regions of Portugal on Tuesday, including the Serra da Estrela area, Peneda-Gerês National Park, and even Serra do Montemuro.
The snowfall was intense in the central massif of Serra da Estrela, resulting in the closure of National Road 339, which passes through the highest point of the mountain.
The Command for Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection in Beiras and Serra da Estrela informed that traffic is halted between Piornos [Covilhã municipality] and Lagoa Comprida [Seia], as well as the access to Torre, since 5:00 PM today due to snow accumulation.
In Montalegre municipality, approximately 600 students were sent home early as a precaution due to the snowfall.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) placed the districts of Guarda and Castelo Branco under a yellow alert for snow, predicting an accumulation of around five centimeters above 1,400 meters and up to 10 centimeters in the highest points of Serra da Estrela.
IPMA also warned of potential disruptions, including restricted or closed roads, ice formation, damage to structures or trees, and compromised local supplies.
