Social Security starts accepting payments via MB Way from today

The Social Security system begins accepting payments via MB Way today, in a phased process across services aimed at facilitating compliance with obligations, an official source from the department revealed to Lusa.

Starting today, the new MB Way payment channel is available on the Social Security portal.

On Tuesday, this option will also be extended to the Social Security mobile app.

The objective is to facilitate compliance with obligations by citizens and businesses, reducing the risk of delays and penalties.

“The introduction of MB WAY as a new payment channel for Social Security represents a significant step in modernizing public services, bringing the State closer to people with simpler, faster solutions that are adapted to citizens’ daily lives,” stated Luís Farrajota, president of the Social Security’s Institute of Informatics, in a written note sent to Lusa.

With these measures, the institute expects a reduction of around 70% in payments made in person at Social Security service locations (approximately 500,000 people).

Last year, more than 700,000 people visited a Social Security counter to pay their contributions, and this year, over 200,000 attendances have already been recorded.

Specifically, for domestic workers, the payment via MB Way becomes available on the Social Security portal starting Thursday.

The Social Security’s Institute of Informatics anticipates a “total reduction of in-person payments in treasuries for this service.”

Currently, domestic workers can pay their Social Security contributions through multibank homebanking and in person.

However, constraints have been identified with these modalities, leading the institute headed by Luís Farrajota to conclude that these difficulties “highlight the need for significant simplification, especially for this group of workers.”

“In 2024, treasury payments for these workers accounted for 30% of payments. This year of 2025, the situation remains,” he adds.

MB Way payments to Social Security were initially scheduled to launch in 2026, but the Government decided to bring this forward amidst measures aimed at simplifying interactions with Social Security and focusing on digital solutions, also reducing waiting times for in-person services.

At the end of April, the Minister of Labor, Solidarity, and Social Security, Rosário Palma Ramalho, noted that the digitalization program being implemented, called “First People,” has phased out 450,000 in-person attendances since January.

In the written note sent to Lusa, the minister emphasizes that “the new payment option via MB WAY is another decisive step among many anticipated this year” to ease interactions with Social Security, reaffirming that the digital transformation program “is saving time for people and businesses.”
