Socialists committed to humanist ideals and rejection of agreements with Chega

During the National Municipal Convention held today in Coimbra, the Socialist candidates’ commitment for the upcoming elections was unveiled, encapsulated in 12 principles, presented by 12 young people, aimed at “promoting local development with cohesion, sustainability, and good governance.”

“Act based on progressive ideals, guided in action and speech by the PS’s declaration of principles and by humanist ideals, cosmopolitanism, the primacy of reason, progress, and sustainability,” it states.

Thus, PS municipal candidates commit to “post-election agreements only with those who pursue those same ideals.”

In a recent interview, PS leader José Luís Carneiro warned that socialist candidates making agreements with Chega’s elected members “will lose the political confidence of the PS.”

Among the other commitments are strengthening economic development conditions locally and urgently addressing the social housing issue and promoting development process sustainability.

Directing intervention “by respecting duties of legality, justice, and impartiality, by implementing effective legitimate mechanisms to combat corruption and by valuing a tolerant, rational, and plural public debate space” is another commitment.

PS candidates must also ensure administrative modernization, transparency, accountability, and promote financial responsibility, along with committing to intermunicipal cooperation.

Strengthening municipalities as spaces of local democracy and promoting equality is another principle established, with the PS aiming for its local leaders to be agents of solidarity and health promotion.
