
During a press interaction in São Tomé and Príncipe, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his stance on the privatization process, stating that in prior governments, it seemed not only inevitable but the only viable solution. He noted that the process was nearly finalized back then.
He highlighted that this privatization strategy safeguards workers’ positions and ensures Portugal’s and the Portuguese state’s predominance since the foreign stake is minor, irrespective of whether there are one, two, or three foreign candidates involved. He emphasized the importance of finding a swift yet procedurally respectful solution.
When asked about consultations with the government regarding this matter, President Rebelo de Sousa mentioned he was informed in advance by Luís Montenegro. “Of course, of course. The Prime Minister has been impeccable, just as his predecessor was, presenting the entire plan before first submitting it to the Council of Ministers and then announcing it to the Portuguese people,” he stated.
Discussing the potential recovery of the investment in the airline, the Head of State asserted it is premature to discuss financial figures due to the international context, suggesting it’s a matter of “wait and see”. He argued that the Portuguese airline holds a “strategic value” due to Portugal’s location and its unique routes, like those to Brazil or Africa.
