An announcement marked the death of Sónia Martins, aged 53, describing her as “the most complete actress of the true TAS ensemble” and highlighting her unwavering loyalty to the company she never wished to leave.
Sónia Martins was born in the parish of Sagrada Família, Luanda, on October 17, 1971, and moved to Setúbal in 1974 at the age of three.
In 1989, she joined the TAS as an intern at the invitation of actor and director Carlos César, who founded the company in 1976 and served as its artistic director until his death in 2001.
The actress remained with the company until 2020, after which she worked for the Setúbal municipality at the Convent of Jesus. She left her municipal position during the last term of former Mayor Maria das Dores Meira, elected by the PCP.
Sónia Martins made her debut in the TAS with the play ‘Os pássaros de asas cortadas’ by Luis Francisco Rebello, under the direction of Carlos César. Over the course of her career with the company, she participated in “more than 50 productions.”
“She was remarkably versatile, playing roles ranging from maid to grand lady, performing each with the utmost professionalism and brilliance, whether in authored theater, children’s plays, or other repertoires,” noted the source.
