The presidential candidate Henrique Gouveia e Melo addressed comments made by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, regarding the former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was described as acting like a “Soviet asset.”
“Foreign policy for the Portuguese state is made by the Government. Anyone in the position of the Presidency – namely, the President of the Republic – should not make personal comments because they represent the Portuguese State,” he stated to journalists in Algarve.
