
The Spanish feature film “Black Butterflies,” directed by David Baute, has been awarded Best Film, marking the documentary filmmaker’s debut in animation.
This animated film portrays the journey of three women forced to migrate due to the climate crisis, originating from the 2020 documentary film “Climate Exodus,” which was honored with the Goya and Platino awards.
In the Best Series category, the fifth season of the Brazilian series “Irmão do Jorel” has been highlighted, winning this award for the second time after its initial victory in 2019.
Created by Juliano Enrico and produced by Copa Studio in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, the series follows the story of a creative boy who begins to face the changes of pre-adolescence, overshadowed by his older brother Jorel’s popularity.
The Best Short Film award went to “Capybaras,” by Uruguayan director Alfredo Soderguit, an animation based on the director’s own book, addressing themes such as prejudice and friendship through the story of a family of capybaras forced to leave their habitat because of hunters.
The short film “Adiós,” directed by Spanish filmmaker José Prats, was recognized as Best Student Animation Short, while in the Best Animated Music Video category, the award was given to the Argentine production “My Way,” directed by Jesica Bianchi.
The Brazilian film “47,” directed by Paulo Garcia and Natalia Gouvea, won in two categories: Best Commissioned Animation Work and Best Visual Development.
The award list was completed with “Neva,” from the Spanish Nomada Studio, which won in the Best Video Game Animation category.
In the technical categories, “Buffet Paraíso,” a Spanish-French coproduction directed by Santi Amézqueta and Héctor Zafra, was recognized for Best Animation Design, while “Gilbert,” a Spanish short film by Alejandro Salueña García, Arturo Lacal Ruiz, and Jordi Jiménez Xiberta, won the award for Best Sound Design and Original Music.
This eighth edition of the Quirino Awards nominated 26 films across ten distinct categories, selected from 263 submissions.
The nominees included Portuguese films “A menina com os olhos ocupados,” “Percebes,” and “Mataram o pianista,” the latter in co-production with Spain.
“A menina com os olhos ocupados” was nominated for three awards: Best Ibero-American Animated Short Film, Best Visual Development, and Best Sound Design and Original Music.
“Percebes,” by Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves, was also nominated in the Best Ibero-American Animated Short Film category.
For the Quirino for Best Animated Feature Film, the nominee was “Mataram o pianista,” a documentary by Spaniards Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, co-produced by Portugal’s Animanostra.
The awards ceremony took place in San Cristóbal de la Laguna, in Tenerife, Spain, and was broadcast online.
The Quirino Awards were established in 2018 “to promote the animation of the 23 countries of the Ibero-American region” and were named after Quirino Cristiani, whom the organization describes as the creator “of the first animated feature film in history: an Argentine production titled ‘El apóstol’ (1917).”
