Three children were rescued on Saturday afternoon after experiencing difficulties in the water at the Cacela Velha bar, in the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, Faro district, as reported by the National Maritime Authority (AMN).
A statement released on Sunday detailed that the children, aged between 7 and 10 and of Spanish nationality, were swept away by the current.
“During a surveillance operation in the Cacela Velha area, members of the ‘SeaWatch’ project detected three children needing assistance in the water, being carried away by a strong current,” it states.
The victims were subsequently rescued and transported to a safe location. The children were found to be “physically well, without the need for medical assistance.”
The AMN reiterated in the statement that swimming activities in the Cacela Velha area are discouraged due to the dangers posed by the location.
It is noteworthy that on July 27, the AMN had renewed this warning after a woman was swept away by the current at the Cacela Velha bar, an unsupervised swimming area.
The woman, aged 29, was rescued by ‘SeaWatch’ project members after experiencing difficulties while crossing the Ria Formosa.
The Cacela Velha bar is advised against for swimming due to its dangers, yet it continues to see a large influx of people, prompting authorities to reinforce the advice against engaging in swimming activities in that area.
