A 22-year-old man was arrested in Alenquer, Lisbon district, on suspicion of committing crimes of sexual abuse of minors who are dependent or in particularly vulnerable situations, child pornography, and sexual abuse of children, the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) disclosed on Monday, December 15, to Notícias ao Minuto.
According to inspectors, the suspect is an instructor of an extracurricular sports activity and coaches children aged 6 to 16.
In carrying out his duties, he also accompanies trainees to competitions, being a practitioner of the sport himself.
It was in these contexts that he allegedly committed the crimes against two boys, aged 11 and 14, between April and November this year, according to the PJ.
Authorities suspect that the sports instructor may have victimized others as well.
The crimes were reported to the authorities by a young person practicing the sport in question. Immediately, the PJ conducted urgent investigative procedures, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
After being presented to the judicial authorities, the suspect was subjected to the most severe coercive measure of pretrial detention.
