State coffers ‘thank’ 2nd Euromillions prize: How much do they collect?

No ticket matched all five numbers and two stars in the EuroMillions draw, but one lucky player in Portugal secured a second prize, leading to a boost in the state’s coffers from this windfall. But how much tax will the winner pay?

The prize amounts to 66,695.41 euros, as revealed on the Jogos Santa Casa website. As a result, the state will collect approximately 13,339 euros in taxes from the fortunate Portuguese winner.

In practical terms, the winner will take home 53,356 euros.

Prizes Are Taxed

The reason is straightforward: “Prizes awarded over 5,000.00 euros are subject to stamp duty at the legal rate of 20%, according to current legislation.”

This means that any prize amount exceeding 5,000 euros, regardless of the game, is subject to taxation.

Additionally, two other players in Portugal won the third prize, each receiving 23,381.72 euros.

With no jackpot winner, the EuroMillions prize pot now stands at 86 million euros for the next draw on Friday, July 11.

How to Claim EuroMillions Prizes?

According to Santa Casa, “prizes up to 150 euros are automatically credited to your Player Card balance,” allowing you to either use them for future play or transfer them to your bank account, provided the total prize amount equals or exceeds 25 euros.

For prizes exceeding 150 and less than 2,000 euros, the amount is transferred to the IBAN specified in the registration form.

For “prizes just above 2,000 euros and below 5,000 euros, you must fill out an online form, and once your identification details are validated, the prize amount will be transferred to the specified IBAN.”

For “prizes of 5,000 euros or more, you must fill out the online form and ensure correct identification.” The steps include:

  1. In-person: Visit the Department of Games in Lisbon or Porto (see contacts and timings).
  2. By Email: Send an email to pr*****@************sa.pt with the following documents: a photocopy/photo (front and back) of a valid ID, a photocopy/photo of a tax identification number (NIF) if not included on the ID, an IBAN proof (bank document with name and IBAN), phone contact, and address details.

What Is the Deadline for Prize Payments?

“The period for payment of prizes over 150 euros concludes 90 days from the date of the mutual bets contest, the National Lottery draw, or the closing of the online scratch card game,” according to the Jogos Santa Casa website.

Moreover, “the user is solely responsible for the accuracy of the provided IBAN, specifically for payment and prize expiration purposes.”
