Steel industry wants quick measures to tackle tariffs

The European Commission announced that its President, Ursula von der Leyen, held discussions with industry representatives to address concerns over the tariffs on steel, aluminum, and derivative products recently declared by U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Industry representatives expressed gratitude for the European Commission’s action plan for steel and metals, as well as the Green Industrial Pact, urging for swift implementation,” the statement released from the meeting indicated.

Steel industry representatives voiced apprehensions about the broader ramifications of the U.S. tariffs, including their impact on derivative products, and urged the European Union to “introduce new steel defense measures—beyond existing safeguards, which expire in June 2026.”

Additionally, there was concern among industry representatives about the “decrease in scrap used for recycling in the EU,” prompting a call for the 27-member commission to implement “effective measures” to sustain these volumes.
