A U.S. district judge has blocked the Trump administration from cutting federal funding to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), which was established and funded by Congress to promote free information and democracy internationally.

On March 15, the Trump administration began implementing cuts to Voice of America (VOA) and other U.S. government-managed media, directing several agencies to minimize their functions to what is legally required. This included the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees VOA, RFE/RL, Radio Free Asia, and Radio Marti, the latter broadcasting Spanish-language news to Cuba.

In a bid to prevent the termination of its funding, RFE/RL filed a lawsuit last week against USAGM, its President Kari Lake, and another official, Victor Morales, claiming the agency violates federal law by attempting to slash its budget, as these broadcasters are funded by Congress under the International Broadcasting Act of 1973.

In the ruling issued on Tuesday, Judge Royce C. Lamberth granted RFE/RL’s request for a temporary restraining order against Lake, stating that cutting federal funding for the organization would breach the mandatory funding procedure established by Congress.
