A 26-year-old man was arrested on March 28 at 10:45 PM in Areeiro, Lisbon, on suspicion of theft.
The Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) reported that, following reports of several suspects stealing a large air conditioning unit installed outside a building, officers were dispatched to the scene, “encountering a suspect attempting to flee on foot.”
Police immediately pursued and intercepted him, noticing oil on the suspect’s clothing, believed to be from the air conditioning unit.
When questioned about his hurried departure from the scene, he confessed to stealing the air conditioner with an acquaintance, stating that the theft was motivated by the desire to obtain the precious metal inside the unit, according to the PSP.
Because the “detainee asserted that he would not voluntarily appear in court,” he was placed in custody at the Metropolitan Command’s detention cells to ensure his presence the following day.
He was subjected to the coercive measure of identity and residence reporting.
