The islands of the Central group (Terceira, Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa) were initially under a red alert, the most severe of three levels, due to wind and maritime agitation until 12:00 local time (13:00 in Lisbon).
Following an update from IPMA, these islands have been downgraded to an orange alert for maritime agitation and a yellow alert for wind during this period.
An orange alert for maritime agitation was also initially set to last from 12:00 to 18:00, but it has been reduced to a yellow alert from 12:00 to 15:00.
In the Western group (Flores and Corvo), IPMA had issued an orange alert for maritime agitation from 09:00 to 15:00. This warning has been downgraded to yellow, ending at 12:00.
The Eastern islands (São Miguel and Santa Maria) remain under orange alerts for wind until 12:00 and for maritime agitation until 15:00.
Previously, an orange alert for wind was expected to last until 15:00, but it has now been reduced to yellow during this period.
A yellow alert for maritime agitation will also continue until 18:00 for these two islands.
The initially expected yellow alert for precipitation in the Eastern group will conclude at 12:00, earlier than the initially planned 18:00.
Tropical cyclone Gabrielle, initially predicted to pass through the Azores as a Category 1 hurricane, has transitioned into a post-tropical storm.
The storm’s most critical period occurred between 03:00 and 09:00 local time (one hour later in Lisbon), impacting Graciosa, Faial, and Terceira the most.
The Regional Government declared a state of alert from 18:00 Thursday to the same time today in the Central and Western groups, prohibiting certain activities.
Public non-essential and non-urgent services, including schools, were also closed in these islands.
