The Public Administration Workers Union (STAL) announced today in a statement that the strike against government policies saw a 90% participation rate in the municipality of Amadora, 71% in Barreiro, 80% in Évora, and 95% in Vila Franca de Xira.
“In Almada, Funchal, Lisbon, and Sintra, the strike also recorded significant participation, severely affecting waste collection and urban hygiene services,” the STAL stated.
According to the union, the initial hours of the strike were marked by “strong participation in the Local Administration, particularly in waste collection and urban hygiene sectors.”
The union anticipates high participation across most municipalities, schools, and municipal companies throughout the day.
“The data known so far reflect the profound discontent of Local Administration workers and the company sector, clearly indicating they support the reasons for this strike,” STAL mentioned.
The strike addresses the “impoverishment policy pursued by the PSD-CDS government — supported by Chega and Iniciativa Liberal, with the connivance and/or support from the PS —; professional devaluation; the ‘assault’ on rights, exemplified by the ‘Labor Package’; the divestment in Public Services and the State’s Social Functions,” as stated by the union.
The Common Front, which includes STAL, is observing from midnight a “big strike” in the Public Administration against the government, accusing it of degrading working conditions and disinvesting in public services.
The strike is expected to see participation from teachers, educators, school assistants, doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, public transport workers, tax inspectors, judicial staff, among others.
The increase in salaries, career valuation, restoration of public links, and defense of public services are also reasons for the strike, encompassing all State workers.
The Common Front represents 29 unions from all public administration sectors.
